Did you know that your body holds about 60,000 miles of blood vessels? With your heart and other muscles, they makeup your circulatory system When your circulation is poor, it slows or blocks the blood flow. This means the cells in your body can’t get all the oxygen and nutrients they need.

Have you ever had your hands or feet get real cold or numb? This may be happening because your limbs aren’t getting enough blood. Poor circulation can also lead to dry skin, brittle nails and your hair falling out. If you are diabetic, your cuts and sores may heal slower.

Here are some tips to improve your circulation:

Stop smoking. It harms the walls of your arteries and thickens your blood.

Control your blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause hardening of the arteries.

Stay hydrated. Blood is half water. Drink 8 glasses of water a day.

Stand up at your desk. Getting on your feet works the valves in your leg veins sending blood to your heart.

Try yoga. When you move, it brings oxygen to your cells. When you twist, it sends blood to your organs. Try a headstand that will shift blood from the bottom half of your body up to your heart and brain!

Pump it up with aerobic exercise. Aerobic means “with oxygen”. when you walk, run, or swim, you take in more oxygen and move it to your muscles. Try to exercise for 30 minutes a day 5-7 days a week.

Squat with your feet shoulder width apart and your arms at your side. Slowly bend at your hips and knees while keeping your back straight, like you are sitting in a chair.

Consider compression socks which squeeze your legs and and move the blood back to your heart. Ask your doctor what length and pressure you need.

Eat more fruits and vegetables and less meat. Steer clear of too much salt and saturated fats.

Brush your body sweeping your blood starting from the feet up your legs and arms. Make circles at your belly and lower back. Do it daily before you shower.

Soak in a nice warm bath to kick start your circulation. Warm water makes your arteries and veins open up a bit wider and lets the blood flow.
